To discuss with the children their fascination with things that are supernatural and that God is more powerful than any super power here on earth.

Acts 8: 9 - 25

Throughout the ages people have made God a means of gain. In Jesus time, as today, there are many people who would claim spiritual powers or even a link to God for the fame, money and power. Simon the sorcerer was a man like this. For Simon it was a “look at me” attitude. He liked the notion of being well known, people watched in amazement while he did his tricks. Then, as today, people want to see the supernatural, miracles, things that can’t be explained. Scripture tell us he had been around for a long time and probably had a big following. When Phillip came to town, all attention turned to him and even Simon followed along, intrigued with the miracles he was performing. In this kind of climate, Phillip would have been seen as just another man with some special tricks. They impressed Simon so much that he wanted to pay for what he called their secret. He was willing to pay any money for that kind of power, not realizing what he was asking. We do not know for sure if Simon became a follower, but he is not the first and will not be the last person who wants to use the supernatural for their own means.
