To teach the children that God sees being a "hero" very differently to the way we see it.
This is not the first time that disciples fought about such issues as "Who is the greatest". Being completely human, they too were always looking for success and ways to be seen as heroes. Jesus always has a way of re-framing our worldly views and this time is no exception. As they are arguing about which of them would be the greatest, Jesus took a little child, someone who had no standing or importance in society at the time and says that if the person who is considered the least in society who is actually the greatest. It's not the first time he takes a child and says that they have qualities that we should all aspire to. Jesus is referring to the innocence, sincerity and openness that you see in a young child. This is a basis for being valuable and they are qualities that make up a true hero.
