To teach children that parents have rules to look after you and that you should respect that they have lived longer and might just know something that could help you.

2 Samuel 15 - 18

Family is the birthplace of self-esteem, learning the value of being human, learning to relate to others. A properly functioning family is also the birthplace of respect for authority and values. (Philippians 2:14). This is how God intended the family to function. With this comes the need for respect for our mothers and fathers. Most of us would be able to say that our parents have invested more into our lives than any other person. For that we owe them respect. We can't deny that age brings life’s hard lessons and the experiences of them bring wisdom. Young people will always be able to learn from older people in this respect. With this command comes a promise that “we will live long in the land” if we honor our parents. We need to treasure our families and look after our parents as they have looked after us. Of course, in these times where family is breaking down and many children are left to fend for themselves this commandment is very difficult. Yet, studies show that up to 75% of our Australian population would still choose to be a part of a positive family experience if they had a choice. The Church needs to stand up for the family unit and be a surrogate for broken homes.
