To teach the children that we are all given different abilities and gifts in life by God. To teach the children that God designed us all to different, so we can learn to rely on each other and work together.
Various texts throughout the gospels speak of the disciples and the things they did.
Jesus chose 12 people to invest in and to teach and train so that they could carry on the work when he was gone. If we were in the same position, we could probably bet that we wouldn't have chosen the same people Jesus chose. They weren't terribly important, many of them had not had much training, and they were not popular and talented celebrities who everyone knew. They failed many times and messed up continually and didn't really understand what Jesus was doing most of the time. Some of the disciples we know better than others. Two of the disciples we know virtually nothing about, yet Jesus chose them for a reason and saw something valuable in them. It just goes to prove the theory that behind every famous person there's an unknown person who is a strength and valuable part of their success. There is no doubt that there are big differences in the disciples, some with quiet courage, others with commitment and determination no matter the cost, others with a quick temper, others who thought things through. They all brought different abilities to the group and they needed each other to achieve what they did in keeping the message of Jesus alive.
