To teach the children that in the race, God wants us to be good sports.

2 Samuel 11-12

King David did not play fair when it came to wanting Bathsheba when he knew he couldn’t have her. It is so easy to cheat or rig things to go your way, not only in sport, but also in life.
Playing fair is not easy, and being a good sport and helping others in life is hard also. Although lust is certainly David’s sin in this story, it is not necessary to go into detail regarding this part of the story. However, children of this age certainly understand someone being attracted to someone else and that for King to order that Bathsheba’s husband put into the front line in order that he might be killed, it was definitely not fair play. It is especially sad to think that even when Uriah had a chance to be with his wife, he choose not to for religious reasons and in honour of God. This put King David in a position that meant that he had to cover up his sin for sleeping with someone else’s wife. Not only did he try to cover his tracks by getting Uriah drunk in hope that he would go and sleep with his wife, but then when he still didn’t do that he had him killed, making it look like it was all in the line of duty. We shake our head at King David and yet we know that this kind if deviate behaviour is very human and all of us, even children would have done something unfair to get something in life that they wanted. The problem with running God’s race is that you might be able to hide it from other people, but we can’t hide it from God and God punished David by him losing his kingship. This was a big price to pay.
