To show through the example of Jesus how we should treat those around us with compassion. To teach the children to look for practical ways we can be compassionate every day.
Mark 5:25-34
This woman had a disease that no one could cure and no one knew why. Doctors were at a loss and it was the type of disease that meant everyone could see there was something wrong with her. People wouldn’t have anything to do with her because they didn’t want to catch it and so she was very alone. There are certainly people in our culture who feel this way today. Amidst the crowd, people would have been aware that she was there and would have tried desperately not to touch her. She had heard about Jesus and knew that if she could just touch him she would be healed. She would never have spoken to him, she would never have felt worthy of that. She was quite content to touch the back of his garment in a crowd, making no fuss so nobody would know. Jesus knew that someone had touched him and he asked the question, “Who touched me?” People looked at him as if he was mad, because there would have been people touching him everywhere. His compassion must have showed here for the woman to admit it was her. If she feared him, she would have sneaked away into the crowd. As he spoke to her, people all around would have been thinking, “Do you know who this person is!” He concentrated on her and gave her hope and publicly commended her faith, which was what had made her well.
