To teach about David's life, his reason for putting God first. To teach that when we put God first we must honour his rules.

1 Samuel: Chapters 16-26, 2 Samuel 5, Job

The third commandment says, “You shall not misuse the name of the Lord”. To take the Lord’s name in vain is to use it in a casual or blasphemous way. Many people today use God’s name to express anger and frustration. Many people have made it so common that is has become just another expression or colorful word to be cool, or to use when they feel like swearing. Swearing is a challenge to many children as they hear it all the time and many grow up learning that it is just the way we speak. If we don’t challenge the children that what we are saying is very hurtful to God, then the world won’t. Job’s friends and wife were asking him to do something quite serious when they told him to ‘curse God and die’ because in the time of Job there was a reverence for God that many people have no concept of today. “God” and “Jesus Christ” have become just dirty words to many, but God still reacts to it in the same way. We must teach our children to STAND strong in Him and respect Him and trust that He is in control even when it doesn’t feel like it. David’s life is a great example of how to live out the first three commandments. From a very young age he was open to God and to living a Godly life. David always knew that his success, talents, abilities and opportunities only came from God and not himself. Throughout every victory it was always noted that “The Lord was with David”. Even when he failed God, God was still with him and spared his life. During his life David knew who God was and never denied that he should be worshipped and honored. David’s life is one of victories and tragedies but in fact he always remained constant in that he was a “man after God’s own heart”. He lived with the desire to put God first in everything.
