To teach by Jesus example that in God’s strength we can control our actions and behaviour, which in turn makes us a better person.

Matthew 26-27

The whole arrest and trial of Jesus was a farce. They had been out to kill him for quite a time now and knew that they would have to do it illegally. They were scared of his popularity and the way the people loved him, it was taking away their power. The fact that they held the trial at night, and on the eve of the Sabbath, was illegal. They got people to give false witnesses but they ended up contradicting each other. Throughout the time they pushed and shoved Jesus and tried to get him to incriminate himself. He stayed silent and self-controlled. Amidst all the lies and hate there was a gentleness about Jesus that angered them even more. Pilate saw this and became scared. He washed his hands of the whole affair. Throughout the time of his trial and crucifixion they beat him, blindfolded him and prodded him, made fun of him, humiliated him, flogged him, struck him on the head and mocked him. During this whole time, knowing he could call down a thousand angels to save himself, or destroy them all with a single word Jesus stayed silent and self-controlled. The centurion that was watching the whole thing, watched him die with control and gentleness and said “Surely this was the son of God”. Jesus example of gentleness at the most difficult time in his life must only inspire us and make a powerful impact on us as to the man that he was.
