To teach the children that there are many ways to hurt others and that we need to treat others as we would like to be treated.

Genesis 4

The sixth commandment simply says, “You shall not murder”. The first biblically recorded homicide is written in Genesis. No one until this time had ever witnessed such a devastating thing as seeing someone dead. This commandment basically says that no one has the right to decide when someone else’s life will end. But there is more than one way to murder someone. Jesus teaches that sin is sin and that if your heart is filled with hate then it is just as bad as murder. In this context, there is little difference between killing someone with a gun or with your tongue or your hateful attitudes (Matthew 5:21-22.). We see it every day on TV and in movies and the newspapers; hate and violence are all around us. It is easy to get used to it and many people resort to violence as a way to deal with problems. Murder in all its forms only destroys people’s lives like it did Cain and Abel. God knew that it is our nature to selfishly destroy others even in the simplest of ways and it is only in God’s strength that we can deal with things in other ways.
